Head Coach Craig McFarland

Head Coach Craig McFarland

Congratulations to new Head Baseball Coach Craig McFarland, who is taking over the reigns of the Alvin Boys Baseball program. The head coaching position was vacated when the well-respected former Head Coach Mike Rogers resigned to take over the head coaching position in Lake Travis after legendary coach Roy Kinnan retired.

Coach McFarland, known affectionately as “Coach Mac,” has been at Alvin High School working closely with Rogers for a number of years and is a player and fan favorite. McFarland claims Alvin High School as his alma mater. He was  an all-around athlete, setting the stolen base per season record by averaging over one bag per game, holding that record for over 25 years. He was named to the 1980s All Decade Teams for both baseball and football.

At the Univerisity of Arkansas, Monticello, McFarland was an All American (Baseball) and is in the UA Hall of Fame (Baseball).

He has extensive teaching and coaching experience. His teaching experience includes one year of History at Hampton High School in Arkansas and 18 years at Alvin High School teaching Physical Education and Teen Leadership. His coaching experience includes one year as Head Baseball Coach at Hampton High School followed by 18 years of coaching at Alvin High School including five years as JV Baseball Coach, eight years as Varsity Baseball Assistant Coach, five years as Varsity Football Assistant Coach, and seven years as Freshman Football Coach. McFarland’s father, Coach Johnny McFarland, coached and taught at Alvin High School for 35 years.

When not on the field or in the classroom, McFarland enjoys hunting, fishing, and spending time with his wife Julia and twin sons, Jax and Jet.  Alvin High School can look forward to many successful years under the leadership of Head Coach Craig McFarland.

Nathan Eovaldi wins his MLB debut Saturday, August 6 in a 5-3 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks. The 6’3, 195 lbs pitcher, drafted as a senior from Alvin High School, was called up by the Dodgers from AA Chattanooga Friday, August 5 to start Saturday’s game against the Diamondbacks.

It was a night of firsts with Eovaldi getting his first MLB hit in his first MLB plate appearance with a single to right field off of Arizona pitcher Joe Saunders, a hit which resulted in his first run.

Throwing fastballs in the mid to high 90s and mixing in sliders to keep the hitters off balance, Eovaldi recorded seven strike outs in five innings of work, the fourth-most in Dodgers history for a pitcher making his debut.
